The Regular Order of St John - OSJ - Christian lay institution with religious, hospitaller, chivalric and ecumenical characteristics, since its foundation in Jerusalem, in the 11th century, has imprinted its mark as far as the boundaries of the Christian Western World, its History, here summarized in its main stages, starts in the Holy Land, even before the Crusades, and goes on all the present time. Just as all the religious Orders, it experienced periods of glory, of decline and of regeneration.

Today, its Rule structures an offer for an active Spirituality, that can be summed up by its Motto : For the Faith, for the Service to Humanity.
This History and Spirituality are part of our heritage : even if we are not aware of it, we are stemming from a world bearing the traces, which are still present in so many places, of these Knights Hospitalers, keepers of more than 19.000 Commanderies or Hospices setted all over Europe, and which mission has always been to defend Christian Faith against those who were willing to attack or destroy it, and to serve those who are still called by them « our lords the poor and the sick »

In favour of these ideals, tens of thousands among them have sacrificed themselves, having fought, even sometimes at the expense of their lives. At the beginning of this new century, at time when many people don't know anymore if they have « future », the taste of genealogical searches is coming back. Looking for one's roots is a way to better know oneself, to better understand from where and from who we come, and who we are descending from. In this extent, the « Knights Hospitaller » of the Regular Order of St. John are considered as part of our historical and spiritual ancestors, and their reason for living has never stopped to be topical
